The daily hospital charge nudged up to €23

From 1 March 2026 · updated 7 July 2026

The flat daily charge for a hospital stay — the bit the Sécu doesn't cover — rose to €23 a day. If you've a decent mutuelle, you'll likely never notice.

What changed

The forfait journalier hospitalier — a flat daily amount you're charged towards board and lodging during an inpatient stay, separate from treatment costs — rose to €23 per day (and a lower rate applies in psychiatric units). It's charged for each day, including the day of discharge.

Why most people won't feel it

This is precisely the sort of gap a mutuelle (top-up health insurance) exists to fill. Most contracts cover the forfait journalier in full, often with no day limit. If yours does, the rise changes nothing for you in practice.

What to actually do

Take two minutes to check your mutuelle's tableau de garanties for the line "forfait journalier hospitalier." If it says covered (100% / sans limitation de durée), you're set. If not, that's a talking point at your next renewal — not an emergency.

Our take

This is exactly what a decent mutuelle is for. If yours covers the forfait journalier, you'll never feel this. Worth a two-minute check of your contract — look for the line by name.
