Exchanging your UK driving licence for a French one — when, and how

Few pieces of French admin generate as much needless anxiety as the driving licence, and it's mostly because people assume they must rush to exchange the moment they arrive. For the majority of British arrivals, that simply isn't true — and knowing it saves you a pointless slog through one of the slower government portals. The post-Brexit reciprocal agreement means a UK licence remains valid to drive on in France, and you're only obliged to exchange it when a specific trigger applies. So before anything else, let's work out whether you even need to.

First question: do you actually need to exchange?

For most people who passed their test before 2021, the honest answer is "not yet." You can keep driving on your UK licence until one of the specific triggers below applies. Open each to see if it's you.

The commonest genuine trigger. Once your UK licence nears its expiry date, you can't simply renew it from France — you exchange it for a French permis. You can start the exchange up to about six months before expiry, and given ANTS's processing times, you should.

Forces itYou commit a driving offence with penalty points

If you incur a French driving offence that carries points or a penalty, the authorities need you on the French system to apply it — so an exchange becomes compulsory. This one catches people out precisely because it's unexpected.

Forces itYour licence is lost, stolen or damaged

If you need to replace a lost, stolen or damaged UK licence while resident in France, you replace it with a French one rather than a UK one.

Special casesMedical or new categories (lorries, buses, etc.)

Heavy-vehicle categories that need periodic medical certification, or adding a new category, generally require you to be on the French licence.

Post-2021 licencesYou passed your test AFTER 1 January 2021

Different rule: if your UK licence was obtained after this date, you must exchange it within twelve months of getting your French residence permit — you don't get to wait for expiry. Check which side of that date you fall.

When you do need to: the ANTS process

Once a trigger applies, here's the exchange itself. It's entirely online, it costs little, and its only real difficulty is the waiting. Open each step.

Exchanges are handled online at the official ANTS driving portal (permisdeconduire.ants.gouv.fr) — the in-person and postal routes were retired. You create an account (FranceConnect works) and submit digitally.

Then patiencePay the €40 and wait

There's a €40 timbre fiscal. Then the hard part: patience. ANTS processing runs anywhere from three to twelve months. You're generally issued a certificate that lets you keep driving while you wait, and the French licence, when it lands, is valid for 15 years (five for heavy categories).

Keeping the road under you while you wait

The thing people fear most — being unable to drive during a months-long processing gap — is usually unfounded. When you submit a valid exchange, ANTS generally issues a certificate (a certificat) confirming your application, which keeps you legally driving in the meantime. Hold on to it, keep it with you in the car, and don't panic at the silence from the portal; long, quiet stretches are normal rather than a sign something's wrong. If your UK licence would expire during the wait, that's exactly why you start the exchange up to six months early.

A note on Withdrawal Agreement holders and older drivers

If you were resident before 2021 under the Withdrawal Agreement, the same broad logic applies — drive on your UK licence until a trigger requires exchange — but it's always worth confirming your specific position, as protected statuses can carry their own nuances. One more practical point that catches British drivers by surprise: French licences for ordinary categories don't carry the frequent medical checks some expect, but heavy-vehicle categories do, and the French system's points and rules differ from the UK's. When you do exchange, take a moment to understand how the French points system works, because it's not identical to the one you're used to.

So: check your expiry date, work out whether a trigger applies, and if not, relax — you're legal as you are. When the day comes, it's an online form, a €40 stamp, and a test of patience rather than difficulty. Not every piece of French admin needs doing on arrival, and this is the clearest example of one that usually doesn't.
